Doctor Capaldi

So I saw the Christmas Doctor Who Special and I didn't really enjoy it that much, for the usual reasons. Briefly, I just feel that Doctor Who has such a wonderful premise and so much potential for being a thought-provoking and engaging piece of sci-fi-fantasy tv, and not just an effects-laden jumble of childish gimmics and nonsense.
That said, I thought Matt Smith did the best with the poor excuse for a script and I look forward to Capaldi's turn as the Time Lord. I was listening to Orbital's remix of the DW theme and thought of Capaldi's Doc wearing tie-dye. So here we are.

Captain America/Lex Luthor & Superman/Red Skull Amalgams!

Hey folks, here are some more amalgams I've been toying around with since the Batman/Spidey ones I did. This time, I went for Captain America mixed with Lex Luthor, vs. Superman mixed with Red Skull, resulting in two overtly nationalistic characters, which also explore the concept of the 'superman'/'supersoldier' when exaggerated and used as a propaganda tool.

Citizen Lex!
American billionaire and genius inventor Lex Rogers had contributed to the US's effort in the war with Germany and Japan through his amazing inventions, but longed to be a part of the actual fighting. Due to his weak and wiry frame he was not allowed to sign up. He thus set about perfecting a super-growth serum, which granted him super-human strength, speed and agility. Donning a red. white and blue costume, as well as an array of gadgets including his energy shield, he sprang into action as Citizen Lex!

Die Ubermensch!
Joh An-El was saved from the destruction of his home planet Krypton by his parents, who sent him off in a space-craft, designed to home in on the nearest habitable world. Due to damage sustained during the planet's explosion, the craft's radiation shielding was damaged, and little Joh An-El was terribly scarred. The craft arrived on Earth and landed in Germany. The young alien child, along with the craft's remains were seized by the Nazi government, who soon realised the immense power he had under Earth's yellow sun. Molded by Hitler's propaganda, the alien grew up to become the terrifying Übermensch, Defender of the Reich!

Merry Deathmas, Oh Grand Wazoo

2 days
and 20 years ago,
Mr. Zappa was transported
into a perpendicular (and perhaps parrallel)
existential plane. In his honour, I present this weird thing.

Green Goblin/Batman Amalgam: The Bat-Rider!

Here's the follow-up to my previous amalgam post, featuring an amalgamation of Marvel's Green Goblin and DC's Batman (respectively adversaries/foes of Spider-man and the Joker) known as... The Bat-Rider!
Norman B. Waynesborn lead a privileged life. Owner of the multi-billion dollar corporation Waynescorp and head of its R&D facilities, Norman had everything he ever wanted, and believed whole-heartedly that it was his right. Vain and self-centred, he was estranged from his wife and son, focusing only on his work. It was not until one fateful night, when he was experimenting with a military-grade performance enhancing drug in his lab, that Martha and Harry came to confront him: tired by his distant and cold behaviour towards them, they were going to leave. There was a glitch in the computers, a containment unit ruptured and Norman's experiment exploded in front of him. Doused by the experimental drug, he miraculously survived the collapse of his lab... his family did not.
Upon finding out that his lab had been sabotaged, Norman decided to put his new drug-enduced strength, agility and intelligence to use. He would find those responsible and bring them to justice. One night, while planning his revenge, a bat crashed through his study window. It was a sign.
Adapting his tech-flight glider technology and projectile weaponry into a bat-themed armoured suit, he found and captured those responsible for his family's death. Afterwards, he turned to crime-fighting: by day a kind and generous philanthropist, by night, a gliding guardian of the night... the Bat-rider!

Spider-man/Joker Amalgam: Anansi the Trickster!

So I was inspired by something fellow artist Alejandro Bruzzese wrote on the Book of Faces, to come up with a Marvel/DC amalgam character, mixing a hero and a villain, one from each publishing house. Namely: Marvel's Spider-man and DC's Joker.
This is what I came up with: Anansi the Trickster!
Young photo-journalist Joe Parker, along with his partner Ben, was trying to get the scoop on a meeting between New Gotham City's most infamous crime bosses at a radioactive waste plant, when they were caught and thrown into a vat of chemicals. Ben didn't survive the fall into sludge, but Joe emerged, hideously disfigured and driven insane by the loss of his good friend. Inspired by the myth of Anansi the Spider, he donned the name and - armed with an array of web-based traps and weapons - became a fearsome anti-hero, an agent of chaos, just as likely to take down the criminal underworld, as he is to take it over.

Professor Who?

Was feeling nostalgic, so I decided to draw a caricature of one of University philosophy professors as his favourite Doctor, Patrick Troughton.

A History in Purple

Hello all, and happy Second Day of Whatever Month it is!
To celebrate this mundane occasion, here is another public domain redesign fan-art thing.
Today, I picked the Purple Claw.

From the image on the PDSH page, it looks like the claw is some kind of gauntlet or glove. Either way an artifact. Wouldn't it be interesting, I thought, if Dr. Weir decided to hand the claw down to his son, so that he could take up the mantle of Purple Claw and continue the legend? How would the change effect the look/outfit of PC? Without further ado, here is my imaginary History of the Purple Claw through the generations.

Which Witch is the Witchiest Witch?

Finally, after a long and busy hiatus, here is another puppet! This time, a mischevous little witch (think Mildred Hubble mixed with Tom Baker's Fourth Doctor).

The Last Doctor

I decided to revisit this idea I had for the final incarnation of the Doctor. I was quite disappointed with the 50th anniversary episode, but the previously broadcast 'An Adventure in Space and Time' by Mark Gatiss awakened in me an interest for the original adventures of the Doctor.
Anywho, here again is my child Doctor and the good Dalek Nau, along with non-camouflaged, coral-like TARDIS in the background. TF

Pokèfriends: The Continuation Continues!

Flareye is a powerful and sometimes grumpy fire pokèmon with a highly effecting weapon: its firey glare! So powerful is this attack that for a long time it is too scared to even open its eyes and requires constant vigilance on behalf of its trainer. However, with enough hard work and perseverance, it evolves into the devastating Glareye. Beneath this pokèmon's tough exterior lies a friendly and caring heart (but don't tell anyone!) Its attacks include Fireblast, Shut Up and LAAASEREYEZ.

Hopkin starts out as the small and seemingly harmless Plopkin. Although entirely made of and covered in the softest, wool-like material known to man/pokèmon-kind, this pokèmon can pack a devastating punch. It is fiercely loyal and just as keen to play as it is to fight. Its attacks include Pound, Doubleslap and Hug.

Mugrea is a fairy-type pokèmon, supposedly the product of centuries-old magic and an equally ancient blend of herbal tea. Some say that whenever Mugrea's cup-shaped head is empty, it is a sign of oncoming bad weather or illness. If anyone drinks the tea in Mugrea's head, it is said they will be subject to strange and/or prophetic visions. Mugrea's attacks include Spoon-club, Dunk and Blend.

More Pokèfriends for a Rainy Wednesday Afternoon...

Pseyeflo! An incredibly powerful psychic pokèmon, Pseyeflow can hypnotise any opponent with one look from any one of its four glowing eyes. It is also troubled by strange dreams and headaches, during which the very laws of physics seem to come apart around it. Its attacks include Hypnotise, Dream-eater and Mimic.

Katberry! This pokèmon starts out as the small and fluffy Kittenberry, has few attack moves and mostly relies on sheer adorableness to avoid danger. Through lots of care and affection, it evolves first into Katberry and finally into the proud and powerful Lionberry! Its licks heal any wound or illness, due to its saliva actually being a delicious, magical fruity juice! Although cute, the leaves that gradually grow on its body and form Lionberry's mane can be deadly sharp, and it will not hesitate to use them if one of its loved ones is threatened. Its attacks include Mew, Defensive Curl and Razor Leaf.

Unicef Donation Confirmation!

Here is a picture of the email we received from Unicef this morning, confirming our donation of 145 Euros to help out in the Philippines!
A huge THANK YOU and GRAZIE MILLE to everyone who visited our mercatino last Saturday and donated, and anyone else who bought some of our homemade products, from Helen (my mum) and me! :)

Steven Universe: Crystal Gem fan-art/self-portrait

I've become a really big fan of the new Cartoon Network show, Steven Universe, created by Adventure Time's Rebecca Sugar. It's really fun, sweet and the characters/setting/music are all wonderful. Thus, I had to do some fan-art!
I thought I could draw myself as a Crystal Gem. My gem would be Cornelian and my weapon would be a magic, super-stretchy and indestructible scarf, which I could use to pick up stuff or protect myself from attacks.

Xmas Stall Products!

It's that time of year again (well, nearly) and that means a Xmas stall in my hometown of Grugliasco!
Last year's didn't go so well (I sold about two things), but I'm hoping this year, with a little help from social networking and general plugging, I'll be able to get more custom.
Mainly because it's not just for me: I've decided along with mum that 50% of any profits we make will go to Unicef to help with their aid appeal for the Philippines.
If you're in Grugliasco on this Saturday, here are just some of the things you can buy. If you're not, then here are just some things which I might make again and ship to you once I have enough money to do so :)

The Conjuror from the Crimson Planet Returns!

Hello all! Time for some more Magician from Mars fan-art/redesign!
I made some slight alterations to my previous design and decided to do a retro style poster. I'll definitely try and come up with some splash-pages or pin-ups as well soon. I just love this character so much!

More Poké-portraits!

Here's another three friends as pokémon:

First up is Conicool. This ice-type pokémon is notable for doing his upmost to keep his cool in any situation. Throughout his evolution cycle he develops new and better ways of refrigerating himself. It enjoys relaxing and is a tremendous hit at parties. Its moves include Ice-Beam, Sun-Cursing and Oh No That's Not On.

Next is Tailbow. This musically-minded pokémon has highly sensitive ears and whiskers which give it an advantage in any fight, but also allow it to play sweet music. Rubbing its tail against its taut whiskers, it produces a melodic and hypnotising sound that sends most enemy pokémon to sleep! Its moves include Sing, Tail Whip and Ravelution.

Finally, Velvetail. A sultry feline pokémon, which has been known to seduce enemy pokémon into surrender with one look. Its tail is the softest thing in the known universe, but also highly durable: Velvetail wraps it around itself not just for aesthetic purposes but also as an effective shield against attacks. Its moves include Purr, Harlem Shake and Oh No You Di'nt.

Poké-portraits: The Return.

I got inspired and decided to do some poké-portraits for some friends.
Here are Statystix, Kettlecrab, Spiraweed, Dadling and Malokkio.

This is the electric pokémon known as Statystix. This creature tends to live inside calculators and computers, making insanely long calculations and mathematical predictions about all sorts of things. It's very curious and helpful to strangers who have very specific questions to ask. It continuously makes notes about which attacks to use in a fight based on probability and variable... um, variables. Its moves include thunderwave and thundersmile and thundernod.

Next, the water/metal pokémon knowns as Kettlecrab. It is said that this rare aquatic-mechanical hybrid is powered by steam and throughout its life it evolves into completely different marine creatures. It is deceptively wise, it enjoys exploring the ocean floor and making smoke circles from its chimney. Its moves include dude no, hammer-time and bubblebeam.

Lastly, we have the grass-type pokémon Spiraweed. This creature starts life as a fairly unremarkable but friendly monster, until it bonds with an alien parasitic plant from beyond the stars (becoming Cosmoss). The growth spreads across its body, expanding its mind and gifting it with psychic powers. Eventually Cosmoss evolves into the galactically open-minded Spiraweed, whose moves include vine-whip, stone-powder and whoah dude it's full of stars.

This elusive pokémon (Dadling) starts out as a little Pupling, who while loving and adorable, needs constant care and protection. These he receives from his older, evolved counterpart, Dadling. Essentially every Pupling grows up to take care of the next generation as a Dadling. The latter pokèmon’s moves include megahug, bedtime story and please go to sleep.

Nobody knows what this mysterious and moody ghost-type creature (Malokkio) hides beneath its cloak, but it is certainly something nasty. It is said that staring for too long into Malok/Malokkio’s eery glowing eyes can drive one insane. Its moves include Glare, Flash, and Oh God My Eyes.

Thanks for reading! If you'd like a poké-portrait, let me know in the comments!

Terrors and Tykes

Well, the results for Project Rooftop's Storm redesign competition are in and, unfortunately, I did not even make it to runner-up or honorable mention. In any other case I might be non-plussed, but I feel a tad more disappointed than usual, seeing as I put a lot of thought into my design.
Ho-hum, I suppose. Not to the judges taste, c'est la vie, et cetera.
[EDIT: turns out I did make it to the honorable mentions :D]

Getting on with life, here is my entry to the far more Fummo-friendly Fan-art Friday, which this time is dedicated to the PDSH, The Black Terror.
My take is a modern-day reiteration of BT, complete with hoodie and updated skull symbol (Bt).

And as a bonus treat, a wee fantasy character, sort of like a fruit-bat halfling, with torch and scarf.
I'm looking forward to imagining playing the Fighting Fantasy book, 'Deathtrap Dungeon' as this little guy. Who would have the heart to slay such a handsome little fellow?

Thanks for reading!

Dr. Magno VS Iron Skull

To celebrate my birthday here's another PDSH redesign/fan-art piece.
These two characters are really interesting. They both hail from an alternate time-line where WWII lasted well into the fifties. Both fought in said war and both suffered great injuries. Dr. Magno lost both his hands and had them replaced with steel prosthesis, which had strange magnetic properties.
The Iron Skull's whole body was severely damaged, leading to a complex reconstruction job, which turned him into a bullet-proof, super-strong, telepathic cyborg... with no nose. Hence, his skull-like appearance and moniker.
Both men turned down different paths during the reconstruction period that followed the world war. The former turned to crime, and the latter turned to its prevention. The two men soon met and became arch-nemeses. Find out more here and here

In this piece (click to embiggen) I made the not-so-good's doctor's steel hand visible to differentiate him from a certain other magnetic mastermind, and I gave Skull a shiny detachable metal nose. Maybe he hides some kind of special gadget in there, but it's mostly to help his self-confidence.
Thanks for reading,

Good Knight and Good Luck

Life is getting increasingly busy now that I'm getting the hang of this teaching lark. That said, here is another addition to the puppet family: a brave knight, complete with removable shield and not-so-removable sword. I wish I could reveal more details about this project but it's still a work in process and super secret :) Stay tuned for more puppets and possibly some drawings!

Wednesday, 9 October 2013

Well, after about a month and a quarter's work (by myself and with a LOT of help from mother, who has also successfully taught me how to sew :D) they're finally done. The first two in a series of puppet/marionettes I'll be designing and making for a super fun future project. (Click on the images below to embiggen)

The larger, leaf-covered and winged lass is a pixie (and mostly mum's work, with mostly design input from me) and the rather smaller, skew-eyed bearded gentlemen is a wizard (about 50/50. I made the hat, satchel, beard, hair, boots and legs).
Technically they're not completely finished as there are still some minor aesthetic touches I want to add. But I'm just too proud not to post them here :) Let me know what you think! TF

Fighting Fantasy Character Sketches

Decided to doodle how my character would look like in the Fighting Fantasy RPG books. I see him as a scruffier but slightly more courageous version of myself. And possibly naked.

Frog-Man Redesign

I've always loved the more ridiculous-looking/sounding superhero comic book characters, so how could I pass up a chance to redesign one of the most ludicrous: Marvel's Frog-Man!
The more I read about old Eugene, the more adorable his character sounded. So here is my take on the Fabulous Frog-Man, complete with suped-up jumping tech and a more armoured, visor-like mask.

Lizard-man Character Design

Working on some character designs. Here's a first draft of one of them.
I'm pretty pleased with how he turned out, but more pleased by the fact that I've finally drawn something properly in what feels like forever!
More soon :) TF

I Spy with my Laser Eye...

Hello everyone!
I'm back from the long brunch of the brainwave! I am once again returned to my homeland, country of good food and lousy politics that is Italia!
To celebrate, here is my entry to Project Rooftop's latest Fan-Art Friday feature: Cyclops!
Below is a groupshot featuring an earlier version of the design. The only significant change is to the visor, which hopefully now looks a lot creepier :)
Thanks for reading! TF
